New-Years-Image-2013

We’ve had a fantastic 2012 at Magnus Music. We’ve had the pleasure to work with a lot of really great bands. We got to know a few new venues, worked with and met a ton of cool new people. Tonight, we’re celebrating the New Year with four shows; with genres spanning from soulful and funky to psychedelic rock to bluegrass.

Erin Lunsford Byers pic

Starting at 9:30 singer Erin Lunsford leads her backing band, the Smokey Bandits in a charge towards midnight over at Byer Street Bistro in Staunton. WE first heard Erin’s pipes back in the Spring and have watched her effortlessly WOW crowd after crowd.

The Design NYE

TDPhoto KOBAlso at 9:30 over in the The Valley funk band The Design  buries 2012 out in Wild Wolf Brewery‘s enclosed heated patio on Nellysford Highway. Another soulful singer lead by a sick jam-based jazz band whose diverse sound covers the gambit between Erykah Badu and YES.

Doors open 10 pm for KOB NYE in Dwntwn CVille where psychedelic rockers Kings Of Belmont host a New Years Party in Club R2. This past year has seen this hilarious trippy rock act clock in many miles touring up & down the East.

Houndog Hill

The latest to start setting fire to 2012 is 7-piece high-energy bluegrass act Houndog Hill lighting  up Whiskey Jar round 10:30. If you haven’t caught HH busking on the mall outside Shenanigans, you’ve probably seen them rock their hometown, Harrisonburg.

So there’s lots to celebrate and a lot of running to do tonight. Happy New Years! Hope to catch you out at some if not all of it. And cheers to an even better 2013!

Help Woolen Mills Bar Host Music Sept 11 @ 6 pm

ATTN: Music Lovers, if you want to celebrate musical diversity in Charlottesville and witness our citizenry help maintain our status as a culturally relavent VA hub, join us in City Council Chambers and show your support for Black Market Moto Saloon at 6PM TODAY. The issue of whether or not the great new Woolen Mills Restaurant / Pub can add Live Music to it’s offerings is being revisited in the Council Chambers. For whatever reason a few months back, BMMS declined to file for a $1500 Special Use Permit and had to cease hosting live music, some of which were our very own Magnus Music Events. Since that time, they’ve paid for the permit, reached out to their  neighbors and installed additional sound reinforcement to further minimize their “sonic impact”. They’re definitely being proactive — not to mention, they’re easy to work with and perhaps most importantly, their very existence allows for musicians and music lovers a chance to mingle in a whole other part of town. Diversity!

AMEN DUNES SEPT. 7 @ TEA BAZAAR

Posted in Magnus Music Presents, Previous Show Blogs, Tea Bazaar with tags , , , on September 7, 2012 by jeyon

Amen Dunes was the buzz band back in February when they opened up for This Will Destroy you at The Southern. The crowd very much dug their droony mysterium. Apparently what we heard was born from improvised recordings made while guitarist Damon McMahon (shown here) was living as an ex-pat in China, his environment very integral to this catchy eerie sound. Between the repetitive rhythms and Damon’s trembling voice, it was as if Syd Barrett were fronting the Velvet Undergound. After their set finished, people walked to the bar going “WHOA that was intense!” Indeed. Tonight Amen Dunes returns to headlines their own gig at Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar. Locals Gold Spur and Loom open the night.

JULIA HOLTER SEPT. 4 @ TEA BAZAAR

Posted in Magnus Music Presents, Previous Show Blogs, Tea Bazaar with tags , , , , on September 4, 2012 by jeyon

We’re very excited about tonight. All the way from LA, the amazing Julia Holter brings her trio to the Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar. Julia’s ethereal and unorthodox form of song-writing blurs the line between indie rock, modern composition, and electronic music and puts her in a league with acts like St. Vincent. A graduate of Music Composition at Cal Arts an often collaborator with fellow Californians Nite Jewel, Julia composes most of her haunting, childlike and futuristic songs in her bedroom, then brings them to life rather magically via keyboard with only the help of cellist and drummer. Tonight’s performance features touring act Hundred Waters and locals Nettles (who rarely play live) opening the gig. This promises to be an unforgettable night of tunes.

APRIL 27 MAGNUS GIGS

Posted in Magnus Music Presents, Previous Show Blogs with tags , , , , , , , , on April 27, 2012 by jeyon

Got a big night ahead of us. We’re offering few different entertainment options for people to choose from. If you’re over in the Staunton / Waynesboro area, head over to BYERS ST. BISTRO where CHAMOMILE & WHISKEY are playing a FREE GIG that starts at 9 m. These guys have been getting great accolades recently. Coming off hot from a CD Release, their brand of Appalachian hyper bluegrass veers into Gypsy and Funk territory and has been begging comparisons to old school Hackensaw Boys. Back in Charlottesville, we’ve got a night of Blues Rock at THE WHISKEY JAR with the ELI COOK BAND. Eli burns it up, he can shred that guitar any way you please, Metal? Classic Rock? Tender with a slide? Any ole way. Tonight he brings his trio to this raucous bar on the Downtown Mall. And for those with more progressive or jammy sensibility, head over to the new spot down in the cut of Belmont on Market and Mead, THE BLACK MARKET MOTO SALOON, where we’re hosting a Magnus Presents gig with Richmond’s SILO EFFECT and Baltimore’s DEAF SCENE. Silo Effect relies heavily on improvisation and have mastered the heady keyboard-driven jam. People that dig locals Trees On Fire would totally get down on Silo Effect. Sharing the bill and starting off the night off is Deaf Scene, a dreamy, droning guitar-driven trio that leans more towards Post Rock than it does jam or jamtronic. Their style is more like Explosions In The Sky and This Will Destroy You. Between both these acts, expect plenty of FX to go around. This show is $5 admission and doors open at 9 pm.

ELECTRONIC ARTS: MINGx2 @ TEA BAZAAR

Posted in Magnus Music Presents, Previous Show Blogs with tags , , , , , , , , on April 14, 2012 by jeyon

If y’all don’t know MING MING yet, he’s the shit. He comes to CVille from that music school in Boston and his ideas about electronic music are bigger than any we’ve heard in this town recently. Beside teaching a class on Reason at the MRC and banging out Beethoven while most people eat breakfast, a recent high point was being hired on to be keys / auxiliary / FX dude on DOM’s last tour, which included Lolapalooza (he’s the one behind the Moog with the tambourine). But ask John and he’ll tell ya he’s fonder of his stint with psychedelic rockers Apollo Sunshine.

That said, Ming Ming’s on his own now with an EP on Lefse Records and currently working on a full length. Not afraid of looping samples, modifying Electribes (he cracked his 1st open at 12 yrs old!) John’s that fertile sorta artist who tackles multiple genres just to prove he can. Dubstep? Why not. Downtempo? Sure. Hip Hop? Aite.

Check out Ming Ming tonight at the Tea Bazaar playing short interspersed sets (9 pm / 10 :15 / 11:30) “tweeners” btwn DC alt rockers Oh So Peligroso and local psychedelic popsters From Here On Blue.

SAT. APR. 14th – MING MING w/ FROM HERE ON BLUE and OH SO PELIGROSO at TEA BAZAAR

DUB REGGAE @ BLK MRKT MOTO SALOON

Posted in Magnus Music Presents, Previous Show Blogs with tags , , , , , , , , , on April 7, 2012 by jeyon

Its a well-known fact that Reggae in Charlottesville happens pretty rarely. Occasionally we’ll get a big name act and folks will be stoked and then it’s gone just as soon as it happened. And Dub Reggae? The type of reggae pushed forwards by deejays like PRINCE FAR I or KING TUFFY THE DUB MASTER is an even rarer bird. You might catch a snatch of some sort of chill downtempo reggae at a clothing store, you might hear some track with no message or lyrics and heavy on the delay on Pandora at a sushi restaurant. But that’s it. You never see it live and done in person. That is, until tonight.

SAT. APR. 7th
SUPER HI-FI
w/ DJ 3RD DEGREE
BLACK MARKET MOTO SALOON
1304 E Market St
$5, 9 pm doors

Magnus Music is proud to host Brooklyn Dub Reggae act, Electric Cowbell Recording artists,  SUPER HI-FI at the cool BLACK MARKET MOTO SALOON. These dudes come strapped with two trombones. Their grooves are chill. Their horn stabs effect off into the distance just like we like it, and they create fantastic tunes to hang out / maybe get sexy and dance to. Blk Mrkt is usually a solid place to find ppl dancing. Fans of  Thievery Corporation, spaghetti western composer Ennio Morricone will surely dig Super Hi-Fi.
