  1. Hello,

I’m with fun lovin Folkcore dynamic duo PALEFACE featuring Paleface himself and darlin drummer Monica “Mo” Samalot and we’re very interested in having them perform in Charlottesville. We’re currently working on the Record Release Tour for their new record The Show Is On The Road, which will release on Ramseur Records (The Avett Brothers, Bombadil, the everybodyfields…) April 28. SONY RED/Thirty Tigers will work on the distribution. We’re working a PR campaign with PRESS HERE Publicity (Bright Eyes, The White Stripes, etc), as well as a thorough College Radio campaign with Team Clermont, in order to promote these shows heavily.

    Ideal dates for this show:
    May 28, 31
We could bring support (David Shultz And The Skyline)

Discovered by Danny Fields (the Stooges, the Ramones, MC5), and an influence on artists such as Beck and Kimya Dawson, Paleface has been touring the US from coast to coast all year in support of 2008 release A Different Story. The duo also had the opportunity of playing several shows to sold out crowds with The Avett Brothers, Kimya Dawson and Langhorne Slim among others. Paleface’s songwriting, instrumentation and vocals are featured on three of The Avett Brothers records, including a vocal guest performance on the Avett’s upcoming Rick Rubin produced release for American/Columbia Records. His vocals are also featured on Kimya Dawson’s Hiddden Vagenda (K Records). The duo also had the honor of performing this past year at festivals such as Pickathon (Portland OR), Floyd Fest (Floyd, VA), Shakori Hills (North Carolina), and Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion (Bristol, VA), and 40+40 Fest (Roanoke, VA) among others.

Please check out more info and links below and let us know your thoughts….we’d love to make it work!

Thanks a lot for your time.

    All the best,

    PALEFACE
    Fun-lovin dynamic duo featuring
Paleface himself and darling drummer Monica “Mo” Samalot. They have been charming audiences from coast to coast with their dynamic & high energy performances, honest & refreshing lyrics, and their raw yet full sound.

Schooled personally by Daniel Johnston, PALEFACE was discovered in NYC, 1990 by Danny Fields (The Stooges, The Ramones, MC5). He soon became the first Antifolk/Neo-folk artist signed to major labels, followed by college radio hits and national tours with the likes of Billy Bragg and The Breeders. While hanging around the city’s Lower East Side with Beck, Paleface became a major influence on Beck’s early work….
“We used to go to all the open mikes together. He taught me Daniel Johnston songs on the sidewalk and let me sleep on his couch. He was a great songwriter, a generous friend, and a big influence on my early stuff’”
Beck on Paleface (American Music, Annie Leibovitz).

After touring with The Breeders, PF collapsed and nearly died from alcohol. Following long recovery & cleansing PF returned to NYC’s Antifolk scene in the early 2000’s and befriended a new breed of artists (The Moldy Peaches/Kimya Dawson & Adam Green, Regina Spektor, and Langhorne Slim, among others). Paleface became a major source of influence and inspiration to many of them.
After finishing a record with his band Just About To Burn, which featured darling drummer Monica “Mo” Samalot, PF met The Avett Brothers…who fell in love with it “My favorite all-time record by a friend” (Seth Avett, June 07). They developed a strong bond based on respect and admiration for each others work. Paleface often shares the stage with The Avetts, and his vocals, instrumentation, and songwriting have been featured on three of their records. The Avett Brothers returned the favor and guest-performed on Paleface’s 2008 full length release “A Different Story”. PALEFACE and Monica “Mo” Samalot recently relocated to Concord, North Carolina and they have been touring from coast to coast, charming audiences of all ages with their high-energy performances, honest and refreshing lyrics and their raw yet full sound. The duo has also been performing at festivals such as Floyd Fest (VA), Shakori Hills (NC), Pickathon (OR) and Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion (TN-VA), among others. Their follow-up record will release Arpil 28 on Ramseur Records (The Avett Brothers, the everybodyfileds, Bombadil, Samanta Crain & The Midnight Shivers, Sammy Walker and Martin Stephenson).

Recent Press on Paleface LIVE Shows And 2008 release ‘A Different Story’

‘Paleface’s performance was solid, easily winning over the crowd’ Performer Magazine, Brian Tucker

‘A Different Story’…A great release to kick off 2008 – if it were released a week earlier, it would have made my top 10 of ‘07′ Creative Loafing, Jeff Hahne

‘The group’s blend is excellent’ Performer Magazine, Julia Reidy

‘A brief but rousing set from Paleface & Mo (aka Avetts’ close pal Paleface on guitar and Monica Samalot on drums) opened the show, and the description on Paleface’s MySpace page is pretty accurate: ‘Tom Waits, Hank Williams and the Beatles in a blender’…perfect openers for the Avetts” HARP, Fred Mills’

‘Last December, when Paleface and Mo charmed the bejeezus outta BLURT during an opening set for the Avett Brothers, we knew we would be fans for life.’, BLURT

‘A joy to listen to…’A remarkable collection of neo-folk. The arrangements display a refreshing simplicity and economy of instrumentation and effects, never getting in the way of the poetry of the lyrics by this prolific songwriter.’ Salisbury Post, Sarah Hall

‘Kind of like Tom Waits and Kim Deal of the Pixies making quirky acoustic folk together’ Charlotte Observer

‘Allegedly better than ever. His latest record, ‘A Different Story,’ is simple and straightforward without feeling too stripped-down.’ Athens NEWS

‘Closing the night was Paleface, a legend of the NYC anti-folk scene… It’s obvious that Paleface has mastered the art of songwriting, bringing to the stage an arsenal of really catchy songs, many of which are lyrically geared towards not worrying and enjoying life. Paleface (and his huge, gruff voice) would be a great addition to any party, or anywhere in general that calls for good times…Paleface delivered a solid, highly entertaining set.’ Jezebel Music, NYC

‘Daniel Johnston was his mentor, Kramer his producer, and Beck… well, as Ramblin’ Jack Elliot was to young Bob Dylan, so Paleface is to Beck’ Urban Folk, NYC

‘This was easily one of my favorite band performances from the entire day at FloydFest on Saturday. Paleface, the folkcore duo of Monica ‘Mo’ Samalot on drums and front man and band namesake Paleface on guitar and harmonica put on one of the most entertaining sets of the day at the Blue Ridge to Bayou Dance Tent. I rolled in just in time to see the start of their early Saturday performance and planted myself right in front of the stage speakers to the right side of the stage and marveled. Tons of sweat flying energy, damn good songs that stomp and rumble, and a beautiful noise that is spreading to ears far and wide.’ http://www.cvillemuse.com

‘Paleface and drummer Mo Samalot place themselves into the upper echelon of the wave of fantastic Americana acts we’ve seen through NC over the past few years’ The Village Idiot

“Paleface was schooled personally by Daniel Johnston and has since become something of a neo-folk icon” The Flagpole, Athens GA

‘ If Tom Waits is the West Coast hermit of the bizarre and the offbeat, then perhaps his East Coast counterpart is Paleface…’ The Daily Times, TN

‘Paleface’s smoky, seasoned voice and acoustic, folk/blues style draws comparisons to Tom Waits and Bob Dylan.’ The Post And Courier, Charleston SC

  3. Hi there,

My name is Michael, member of Tactylics, a funk-rock band from New York City in the vein of Maroon 5, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and The Police (www.myspace.com/Tactylics). Just noticed that iS Venue has a cancellation for May 20–I wonder if you might have room on the bill for Tactylics to perform? We are talented musicians, put on a great live show, and we know how to draw a crowd in a new market. I have a bunch of good friends graduating from the MBA class already lined up to come see us if we make it in to play before end of May. We could round up support as well, though any help would be appreciated. If the 20th doesn’t work, we’re open to later dates this summer as well. Thanks for listening and being flexible; I definitely look forward to your reply.
